Vacant, blighted retail location transformed into welcoming, efficient treatment center

Midwestern Connecticut Council of Alcoholism, a non-profit established in 1972, provides substance abuse prevention and treatment throughout western Connecticut. Their outpatient location on Whalley Avenue in New Haven was no longer able to serve the growing needs of clients or staff.

The MCCA Leadership Team investigated purchasing a former CVS retail building located less than one-half mile away from their existing location. Vacant for several years, the structure had been vandalized and the entire site was blighted.

In 2022, Kenneth Boroson Architects was contracted by MCCA to help obtain approval from City Plan for the adaptive reuse of the space to become a new outpatient facility.

Our team interviewed MCCA staff and assessed the existing site to determine their needs and wants for the new facility prior to design and construction.

Our firm has also been contracted to design renovations at MCCA locations in Danbury and Sharon.
