Kenneth Boroson Architects was contracted by a private developer to design the conversion of a historic former church into market-rate apartments.
The former Evangelical Covenant Church, located in the East Rock neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut, was constructed circa 1925 in the Colonial Revival style.
The developer, who is based in Manhattan, describes New Haven’s architecture as “almost like taking a trip to Europe without taking a plane.” His vision for 590 Orange Street was to maintain its historic exterior while enhancing various interior design elements.
The height of the original nave allowed our firm to re-design the space to become two separate floors of apartments, each with a unique floor plan. New custom-designed, energy-efficient windows were set into the existing arched frame so the brick exterior could be maintained. In addition, off-street parking for five vehicles was provided.
